Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Yoga on health in the elderly, which contributes to develop an effective nursing intervention to promote holistic health in the elderly.
The research design was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design.
The subjects of this study were forty-three subjects, who were assigned to the experimental (22 elderly) and the control (21 elderly) groups. The experimental group received yoga intervention three times a week for 6 weeks. In order to evaluate the effects of yoga, blood pressure, physiological parameters (cholesterol, cortisol, blood sugar), range of motion, grip strength, and perceived meaning of life were measured before and after the treatment. Collected data were analyzed by x©÷ test and t test using PSSSWIN program.
The results are as follows:
1) There was a decrease in systolic blood pressure and in blood cholesterol level in the experimental group only.
2) The range of motion of the shoulder joints increased in the experimental group only.
3) There was an increase in the level of meaning of life in the experimental group only.
The results showed that Yoga was an effective nursing intervention for the elderly to promote their well-being an to reconstruct them by setting mind, body and spirit at ease.
